Everyone knows that you have car insurance to cover damages to your car if you have the bad luck of being involved in a car accident. You may even expect to be covered if your car is damaged while parked someplace. But it may be a pleasant surprise to learn about some of these other things that may be covered by your auto insurance.
Did you know that your pet may be covered for injury treatment if it is injured while in your car? Your pet can be covered with typical payments ranging from $500 to $1000 per incident, and in some cases even up to $2,000. Pet injury coverage might even be included automatically. Ask your insurance agent if you have this coverage.
If you’re in a car accident that causes you to miss work, your car insurance may be able to cover some of those lost wages. Personal Injury Protection (PIP) covers injuries for you and your passengers and may include reimbursement for lost wages. PIP is required in 12 states and optional in eight others. Ask your agent and find out if you have this coverage.
What if you park your car someplace and it gets hit with a piece of space junk? Space junk is considered a falling object and should therefore be covered under your comprehensive coverage. Of course, there’s a deductible but now you don’t have to worry about space junk.
Your comprehensive coverage will also reimburse you if your cars electrical wiring gets gnawed on by little creatures like squirrels, mice or chipmunks.
If you live in the city and park your car on the street there are a few things that can harm your car, including riots. If you have comprehensive coverage, you may be covered for riot related damages such as shattered windows, scratches and other forms of vandalism.
