There’s nothing like the freedom of having your own car to drive while on vacation in a foreign country. You don’t have to depend on buses or trains for one thing, and there no strict schedule to keep. You can come and go as you please and you can see places you may not be able to otherwise. But if you’re going to rent a car while on vacation in another country there are some things you should do to make sure you don’t have a problem.
Don’t wait till the last minute to figure out your insurance costs. Check your coverage in advance, sometimes your own credit card may offer enough coverage to get by although you may have to add liability in some cases. If you have car insurance now, that may also cover. What ever policy you do end up getting, get it in writing and have it with you when you travel.
Many countries have different rules for driving so make sure and learn as many rules and laws as you can. Although many of the rules for driving are similar in most countries there are some that differ slightly. In some countries you can’t turn right on a red, and in others the slow lane can be used for passing. Finding out these rules in advance can be a big help.
There is also such a thing as an International driving permit that is available. Most countries don’t ask for these any more, but it could happen, and it would be even better if you had one. These permits only cost $20 and are valid for a year. If you want to consider this, check with your rental company before leaving your country just in case, you can get one through AAA and AATA. Other than that, have a great vacation!
